Frederick Mark Rolfe was born in Whepstead in 1872 (Thingoe Q1-1873 4A:543), son of Harry and Ellen ROLFE (née HAYWARD).
1881 census...Aged 8. he was at The Old Workhouse, Whepstead with his father Harry ROLF [34]farm labourer born Whepstead; his mother Ellen [33] born Bury St Edmunds; sister Amy [11], brothers Henry [10], Herbert [5] and Philip [2]. All the children were born in Whepstead. 1891 census...Frederick has not yet been found in the 1891 census. His parent were still at The Old Workhouse, Whepstead with his brothers Herbert and Philip, plus sister Catherine [9], brothers Francis [4]and Albert [5 months]. He married Elizabeth Charlotte TAYLOR [1-6-1862] (Sudbury Q3-1895 4A:1097) 1901 census...Aged 28, a groom, he was at Summerpit, Elveden with his wife Ellen C [30] born Stansfield and their daughters, Olive M. [4] born Cockfield and Ellen A [2] born Stanningfield. 1911 census...Aged 38 a domestic groom, he was still at Summerpit, Elveden with his wife Ellen Charlotte and daughters Olive Maude and Ellen Alice. CWGC have his wife living at 29 Home Farm, Elveden. By the time of his death the children would have been past 16 years of age andtherefore not eigible for pension paments, hence we do not have their details on the pension card. |

He enlisted in Bury St. Edmunds.
He had served in the Balkans. Dying of his wounds and his Army service records not being found, it cannot be said exactly where or when he was wounded. He died at No.46 Casualty Clearing Station, Proven. The Register of Soldiers Effects has him serving in the 88th Field Ambulance and dying of wounds received in action.
